ER referral

I have a BCBS IL HMO plan. I was in the ER over the weekend and they gave me a number to call to see a surgeon. Do I need to go to my primary first to get a referral to a surgeon or can I call the number that I got on my paperwork from the ER?

Hi Alexandra, HMO plans do require that you see your primary care provider to receive a referral to any specialists. ~ KW
